Heatran was ubiquitous in in DPP,and is still common in OU gameplay even though it didn't receive to many new toys in BW. With its unique typing, great defenses and moves that give it excellent coverage Heatran should always be considered for a potential spot on a team.
Set #1: Offensive HeatItem: Air Balloon
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 252 SATK / 4SDEF / 252 SPD
Nature: Modest / Timid
- Fire Blast / Flamethrower / Lava Plume
- Earth Power
- Hidden Power(Grass / Ice) / Dragon Pulse
- Stealth Rocks
Set Explanation: Heatran's typing allows it to counter most of the hazard setters in the game (Skarmory,Forretress,Ferrothorn) meaning its the perfect counter for them as well as grea at setting up entry hazards with Stealth Rocks by scaring them out. Fire Blast is its most powerful STAB,but if you dislike its accuracy Flamethrower and Lava Plume are considerable options. Earth Power counters other Fire types and Heatran as well as Tyranitar. Hidden Power Grass hits Politoed and Rotom-W hard while Hidden Power Ice is for the Dragons and other threats like Landorus however Dragon Pulse hits Lati@s harder. A Modest nature can be used for the extra power but a Timid nature allows Heatran to out speed Adamant Dragonite and such. The Evs are straight forward.
Set #2: DefensiveItem: Leftovers
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 252 HP / 16 DEF / 240 SDEF
Nature: Calm
- Lava Plume
- Stealth Rocks / Toxic
- Protect
- Roar / Earth Power
Set Explanation: A Heatran set oriented to more stall or defensive teams. With its great 106 base defenses Heatran can take hits with ease. Lava Plume is the preferred STAB as it may burn physical threats making Heatran even harder to take down. Stealth Rocks is always helpful but if you already have a Stealth Rocker Toxic is always a viable option to cripple Heatrans counters like Politoed. Protect is perfect for both scouting and toxic stalling while Roar is great at phazing out certain pokemon that try to setup. Earth Power can still be used to hit opposing Heatran and other threats. The EVs allow Heatran to take nearly all special threats and wall things like Genesect with ease.
Set #3: Flame ChargeItem: Air Balloon / Life Orb
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 252 SATK / 4 SDEF / 252 SPD
Nature: Modest / Timid
- Flame Charge
- Fire Blast / Flamethrower
- Earth Power
- Hidden Power(Grass / Ice) / Dragon Pulse
Set Explanation: Similar to the offensive Heatran this set aims to get a few speed boost from Flame Charge then proceed to sweep. Flame Charge is the crux of this set, while Fire Blast is the main STAB yet like always Flamethrower is a option. Earth Power eliminates opposing Heatran. Hidden Power Grass hits water types hard but if you have those checked Hidden Power Ice or Dragon Pulse is always a option. A Flame Charge boost even with a Modest nature allows Heatran to out speed Tornadus-T,Dugtrio and Alakazam, while with a Timid nature not even Jolteon can hope to out speed. The EVs are a replica of the offensive set yet the item you give it depends on if you can handle Ground type threats or want extra power placed in moves.
Set #4: Heated SpecsItem: Choice Specs
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 252 SATK / 4 SDEF / 252 SPD
Nature: Modest
- Fire Blast / Overheat
- Earth Power
- Hidden Power Grass
- Flamethrower / Dragon Pulse
Set Explanation: The set made for pure wall breaking, nothing else and nothing more. A Specs boosted Fire Blast is a nightmare for whatever as to face it and doesn't resist while Overheat is more or less the same, even do watch out for the special attack drop. Earth Power cripples Tyranitar and opposing Heatran as well as Tentacruel. Hidden Power Grass is the bane of Politoed,Kldeo, and Rotom-W who try to switch in. Flamethrower offers a more accurate STAB while Dagon Pulse sends the Dragons fleeing. With the given EVs and nature wven its counters may have a hard time switching in.
Set #5: TormentTranItem: Leftovers
Ability: Flash Fire / Flame Body
EVs: 244 HP / 44 SDEF / 220 SPD
Nature: Calm
- Substitute
- Protect
- Torment
- Flamethrower / Lava Plume
Set Explanation: The bane of all things that are Choice or have only one reliable move to take down Heatran with. This set aims to setup a Substitute followed by a Torment and finally stalling it with a combination of Protect+Substitute. Choiced pokemon are usually forced to switch out or use the move Struggle and face the recoil damage while pokes that have only one reliable move to take Heatran down with risk getting burned or KOed by Flamethrower or Lava Plume. Basically this Heatran set is made to give out long brutal stall wars that are almost endless. For this set to truly shine entry hazards are needed as it may force many switches, mainly Toxic Spikes as it can Toxic Stall out things easily and burn the threats that are immune to Toxic Spikes. Also for this set to work prediction is key.
CONCLUSION:Heatran is always a great poke for almost any kind of team whether it be offensive or more stall based. Even with its unique typing it has some major weaknesses to Ground and Fighting attacks. Terrakion,Landorus, and Gliscor all counter Heatran well but must be wary of certain attacks. Bulky waters like Politoed can limit Heatran by summoning rain while Chansey and Blissey fear very little from Heatran. However the list of partners for Heatran is very large. Defensive Celebi,Skarmory, and Cresselia can all take some of Heatrans threats with ease,as well as Gengar,Landorus(T),Amoongus, and Rotom-W. All in all there's always room for a Heatran on most teams so use it wisely.
